Stem Cell Therapy Q & A

What is stem cell therapy?

Stem cell therapy is an emerging and exciting type of regenerative medicine that uses stem cells to stimulate your body’s natural healing response.

Mesenchymal stem cells are the cellular building blocks of every tissue in your body. In addition to the ability to multiply, stem cells can also change or differentiate into whatever type of cells your body needs for repair.

For example, if you have a tendon injury, your body heals as your stem cells turn into the cells that comprise your tendon, repairing tears, and other injuries. Stem cell therapy boosts this process by flooding your injured tissue with additional stem cells.

What conditions can improve with stem cell therapy?

Dr. Jones often includes stem cells in multidisciplinary treatment plans for injuries and conditions, including:

  • Sports injuries
  • Tendon injuries
  • Muscle and ligament injuries
  • Arthritis
  • Back pain
  • Joint pain

Doctors and medical researchers are studying the applications of stem cells all the time and finding new ways to use these powerful cells to promote healing, reduce pain, and restore your quality of life.

What happens during stem cell therapy treatment?

Dr. Jones begins your stem cell therapy by extracting the stem cells. In most instances, the stem cells are extracted from your bone marrow, though there are other types of stem cells that can be harvested, such as from adipose or fat tissue, for example.

He provides a sedative and local anesthetic before using a hollow needle to aspirate the stem cells from your hip.

Next, he separates the rest of the stem cells from the sample in a centrifuge. Once the stem cells are properly harvested and prepared, Dr. Jones injects them into your injured tissue or area. This is done on the same day.

He may use an X-ray to guide the placement of the needle, ensuring he delivers the stem cells to the correct location. In some cases, Dr. Jones may recommend combining stem cell therapy with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to optimize the effectiveness of your treatment.

You may have some swelling, stiffness, or tenderness following your stem cell injection. However, any discomfort subsides quickly. You may also wait for a few weeks before the effects of stem cell therapy become apparent, as your body needs time to repair the damaged tissue.
